International students must meet the cost of study and live in Switzerland. The Swiss Embassy in Indonesia requires some evidence that students have enough money and funds available, namely by showing proof of the average cost of living at CHF 21,000 per year plus tuition fees per year.

The cost of living for students ranges from CHF 1,000 to CHF 1,500 for pocket money and daily necessities, because usually when students go to school in Switzerland, the cost of housing, food, and insurance is included in School fees.

Type of Accomodation

Most universities in Switzerland have a Housing Office or International Office that can help students determine the most suitable accommodation option. The types of accommodation generally occupied by international students in Switzerland are:

(a). School or University Accommodation (University Residence)

As an international student you will get special prices for accommodation within the campus area, thanks to subsidies from the University where you go to school. There are universities that have included accommodation costs in fees for school fees.

Accommodation facilities within the campus area are generally equipped with beds, study rooms, bathrooms, laundry facilities, kitchens, and shared gatherings. However, subsidized student housing is limited in number and therefore you must book ahead of time before arriving in Switzerland. The cost of accommodation in standard double room rooms on campus is CHF 4,200 to CHF 5,350 per semester.

Detailed information about accommodation can be found on the bulletin board in the campus area or minimarkets around the campus where students who will soon graduate offer their rooms to rent.

(b) Rent an apartment or house

International students can rent an apartment (Wohngemeinschaft / Colocation) or flat. Many international students occupy apartments or flats together (sharing). Renting an apartment is commonly done by students and young people. The monthly rental fee varies depending on the type, location and condition of the apartment, namely:

Studio (bedroom / living room / kitchen) or 1 room (separate kitchen): CHF 500 to CHF 850

Apartment 2 rooms: CHF 900 to CHF 1,300

3 bedroom apartment: CHF 1,300 to CHF 1,800

Apartments 4 rooms and more: starting from CHF 2,000
